Artist’s Statement

In early summer 2025 I was working in an old house on the outskirts of Tokyo. For about two weeks, I took the subway and local train out from the city every day and stayed there working. On the trains and on the street I kept seeing different faces. It felt pretty much the same as living in Taiwan, or the time in Hong Kong. On the desk in the room where I worked, upper left, there was a stack of cheap sketch paper that’s already hard to find these days. I bought it on the way to the house on the first day, because I hadn’t seen it in a long time.

While I was there, I’d take a short break roughly every hour — no phone, no answering messages — just sit under the air-con for a bit, or drink coffee and smoke by the floor-to-ceiling glass door. Around the third day, during those breaks, I started drawing circles in pencil on the sketch paper on the desk, thinking about the faces I’d seen on the way, or about my own expression. Turns out expressions aren’t that far away after all. (Start)

These faces were drawn later, at home in Taipei.

About the Artist

Born in 1978 in Hong Kong, Lee Kit lives in Taiwan.
