2026 Sonic Shaman Campaign

Lee Kan Kyo — The Last CD

NT$25,000 / Limited to 10

  • The campaign edition consists entirely of customised CDs specified by the supporter: Lee Kan Kyo sources the requested second-hand original music CD to remake. Second-hand CDs may show scratches or wear — this is expected. If the requested title turns out to be unobtainable, TheCube Project Space will coordinate a substitute with you.
  • After your pledge, TheCube will contact you to discuss the customisation. Expected delivery: September 2027.
  • Includes two Full-Access Passes to Sonic Shaman.

About The Last CD

The CD was once a medium of the “future”. In its era, digital fidelity, laser reading and near-lossless preservation made people believe that music had finally found its perfect form. But media never stop evolving. CD replaced the cassette, streaming replaced the CD, and with each substitution the older format sank to the bottom, carrying with it the listening habits, purchasing rituals and bodily memories of its time — layer upon layer within our perception.

The Last CD starts from this logic of layering. Each CD case is hand-made from colour pencil, paper and acrylic, with hand-drawn covers and obi strips; a sealed zip-lock bag inside holds the original lyric booklet. Layer wraps layer: the medium wraps the music, the artwork wraps the original, the moment of tracing wraps the memory of the past. To touch these forms is to open those layers.

Each tracing lays down another layer on the original contour. Memories from different times accumulate on The Last CD, one over the other.

About the Artist

Lee Kan Kyo is a Taipei-born, Tokyo-based artist. He meticulously hand-redraws everyday fragments of media culture — supermarket flyers, DVDs and CDs — translating the printed language of commercial objects into an intimate act of tracing and preservation. In 2014 he won Japan’s 1_WALL Grand Prize (graphic art), and became the first Taiwanese artist to hold a solo exhibition at Guardian Garden in Ginza.
