Artist’s Statement

Sometimes I make clay with my children — subject open, but it usually ends up being poop, animals, sushi, balls, that kind of thing. We’d take these silly little pieces to the park at night, where there’s a plinth with no statue on it, quietly place them on top, and go home feeling satisfied. Every time we passed the park after that, we’d check on them, still standing on that enormous plinth — a small “well done, you’re still with us!” moment. Probably no one else even noticed.

This year, for a month, I suddenly took clay seriously. When I finished pieces I no longer wanted to put them out on the park plinth; when the kids asked when we were going, I’d say, “hmm, this one turned out pretty well… let’s see later…” Eventually they lost interest in the mission, and I settled into a rhythm of one piece a day — grateful to have found a temporary purpose. After a month I had over twenty sculptures piled like traffic cones in the corner of my living room. The interest had faded, but I didn’t know what to do with them either.

This time I selected a few sculptures related to sound for the campaign, and photographed them properly. The month of enthusiasm finally found meaning, and I began to feel fond of them again. That image of us placing pieces on the plinth at night came back to me too.

About the Artist

So Yo-Hen received the Grand Prize of the 12th Taishin Arts Award and was part of the Taiwan Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale (2011). His recent practice spans moving image, sculpture and performance, with a persistent focus on the narratives of everyday labour and life at the margins.
