Curated by sound artist Yannick Dauby, co-organized by Taiwan Film Institute, Taiwan International Documentary Festival and TheCube Project Space, the exhibition KINO-EAR: Audio Document / Audio Documentary will be on view from 11 May to 8 July 2018 at TheCube Project Space (The opening reception will be held on 12 May at 3 pm), it is also a part of the 2018 Taiwan International Documentary Festival.
KINO-EAR: Audio Document / Audio Documentary features a fine selection of audio works from Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, France, UK, the United States and Australia. These pieces were based on field recording, some of them were edited, mixed and collaged by their creators. A profusion of sound-woven stories, sceneries and events, and auditory descriptions thus unfold from the listening space and the display of diverse media such as documents and photographs at the venue. By curating this exhibition on audio documentary, Yannick Dauby not only expects to offer the audience an enjoyable listening experience, but also seeks to pose reflexive queries on our ability in listening.

Exhibition

Recordists are people who observe the world with audition rather than vision. Through microphones and headphones, they interpret their sonic environment: the sound recording tools sometimes act as a filter, sometimes as an enhancer, revealing details and/or creating a distance. The recorder allows to keep traces of acoustic events, in a non-neutral way since it recall to us the sounds that have been modified by the position in space and time, the gestures and the equipment of the recordists.
Through a refined process of selection, recordists sometimes propose to share their listening experiences, creating ‘Audio Documents’ that would trigger a new perceptual experience for the audience.
Occasionally, they would work with those sounds by slicing the sonic matter, assembling fragments of sounds – editing (montage) and mixing. The result is a construction of a discourse, of a narration, combining sounds into a cinéma for the ear, ‘Audio Documentaries’.
This exhibition offers an array of sound works based on field recording (sound recordings made outside of the studio), at the cross-roads of journalism, ethnography, ecology and sound art. This unparalleled practice offers a reflection on our listening abilities, an occasion to examine the relations between audio technology and our collective memory of the sounds, and last but not least provides a delightful experience to your ears.

About Curator
Yannick Dauby (b. 1974, France) is a sound artist. His background in musique concrete and improvisation, using electroacoustic devices and phonographies. As a field recordist, he has particular interest for animals or nature sounds as well as urban situations and unusual acoustic phenomenas. Excursions are pretext to a sonic gathering, and often leads to the realization of phonographic collages. He often collaborates with other musicians, visual artists and dancers, producing audio-visual performances or installations, and makes sound design for films. His work has been presented by various international festivals, record labels and biennale exhibitions. He is based in Taiwan since 2007, interested into the field of anthropology and ecology, exploring the island’s soundscape through artistic research, developing art projects in local communities and documenting the fauna and its environment, creating art & science projects in collaborations with biologists. Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF)
Founded in 1998, the Taiwan International Documentary Festival, TIDF, is one of the major professional platforms for documentaries in Asia. We are looking for innovative documentaries with unique points of views which are relevant to social and human interests.
