Harmonielehre ─Ting-Jung Chen Solo Exhibition

Initiated in 2016, TheCube’s research residency program has annually supported artist(s) and curator(s) to Taiwan or foreign countries for their respective research projects. In 2021, TheCube invited Ting-Jung Chen, the winner of the Kunsthalle Wien Prize 2018, back to Taipei for the four-month research residency. Orientating her research toward the subject of “sound as a tool for identity and community construction,” the artist is going to stage her solo exhibition— Harmonielehre that treated surround sound, sculpture, and image as the media. Visitors were welcomed to this exhibition where they could immerse in the mesmerizing world of sound waves interlaced by the real and the virtual.

Atlas of the Closed Worlds —Wu Chi-Yu Solo Exhibition

Following his four-channel video installation work The LED Future (2020), which investigated artificial light and the consciousness behind technology, artist Chi-Yu Wu presented his work Atlas of the Closed Worlds at TheCube Project Space. Through the approach of scenario planning, this work unfurled extensive research, stretching beyond historical facts along the long river of time, and including a cornucopia of changes in the surroundings and myriad imagined possibilities. Events from history and novels were amalgamated into a repository of information, generating different closed worlds through random numbers and evoking dystopian fantasies.

Artificial Unit, curated by Sun Yi-Cheng, seeks to reexamine how the existing units (incl. nation, family, race, and self) were formed through the “regulated co-production,” and on the other hand tries to construct an ideational model for the question as to “how people fabricate units” on the basis of exhibition and scenario-based performance.

UNIT OF INTERDEPENDENCY

Seeing art as alternative activities to produce knowledge, this exhibition has grown out from the project, Selves-Educating, to focus on the collectives or communities formed for co-production of alternative knowledge, as well as the political subjects constructed during the process of co-production, in which common ideology and active/resistant agencies are established via negotiation. For this exhibition, these self-organizing political subjects, which co-produce alternative knowledge, are saw as the "unit of interdependency" for us to re-imagine an ideal society.

This exhibition, titled “The more I ignore you, the closer you get.” started on view from 18 February until 9 April, 2017. Lee Kit tends to project the indescribable spiritual dimension of our quotidian existence to the exhibition venues with paintings, texts and images based on the dialogues that embody his personal attributes and implicit political struggle for survival. His artworks always leave the spectators with a feeling of empathy for his deep sentiments and acumen.
