Join us on AUGUST 28TH 7.30PM! Mak Wai Ho (Mak), a Malaysian senior music curator will give a talk, "Sonic Crossroads: Exploring Ethnicity and Language in Malaysian Independent Music", exploring the development and influence of Malaysia’s independent music scene. Since his teenage years, Mak has been immersed in the sounds of Malay pop and rock, later devoting himself to the independent music field, from promoting Chinese-language indie music to bridging the Malay and English music scenes. Moving between Chinese and Malay communities, he has observed how musicians navigate choices about language and identity, while actively fostering cross-cultural collaborations. For Mak, language is more than a tool for communication—it is a medium of creation and identity. And sound, perhaps, can cross the boundaries between communities. This lecture will take you into the heart of Malaysia's independent music scene. Through case studies of multilingual creations, we will rethink the intersection of language and ethnicity. We will not only discuss why some musicians choose to create in Malay, while others opt for English, Chinese, or even multiple languages, but we will also explore, from the perspective of the Malay community, how they find their unique musical and linguistic context—from their initial musical awakenings to developing their own creative trajectory and style🔥 Whether you are a musician, a researcher, a cultural enthusiast, or simply someone curious about this land, you are welcome to join us and rediscover Malaysia with your ears🇲🇾. **This event will be conducted in Chinese** 資深音樂策展人麥偉豪（Mak）將來分享馬來西亞獨立音樂的發展歷程和影響：《聲音交界：從獨立音樂看馬來西亞族群與語言的交織》講座。 Mak自少年時期便沉浸於馬來流行與搖滾的聲音世界，之後投身獨立音樂，從推廣中文獨立音樂到跨足馬來與英文音樂場景。他在華人與馬來族群之間穿梭，觀察不同音樂人對語言與認同的抉擇，也積極促成跨族群的合作與交流。對 Mak 而言，語言不只是溝通工具，更是創作與身份的媒介——而聲音，或許能跨越族群的界線。本場講座將帶你走進馬來西亞的獨立音樂場景，透過多語言創作的實例，重新思考語言與族群的交會。我們不僅會討論為何有些音樂人選擇用馬來語創作，有些則選擇英語、中文，甚至多語並用，更會從馬來族群的角度出發，探討他們如何從最初的音樂啟蒙，逐步的找到自己獨特的音樂和語境，發展出具有自我風格的創作脈絡🔥 時間：2025.8.28（四）7.30pm-9pm

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Saturday! Malaysian musician-artist Azmyl Yunor brought us “THE ETHICAL TROUBADOUR: How To Keep It Real While Navigating Through Moral Panics And 'Yellow Cultures' In Malaysia”, blending lecture and live performance to humorously yet sharply guide the audience through the history of punk music labeled as “yellow culture” in Malaysia. While listening attentively, the audience was also often amused by Azmyl’s wit and humor—feeling, between music and storytelling, how he sings out his voice amid social pressure and cultural scrutiny 🎸✨. 📣 Next Up: Our next talk features veteran Malaysian music curator Mak Wai Ho (MAK), who will share the unique development of Malaysia’s independent music scene 🎤. Azmyl—a bilingual singer-songwriter, scholar, performer, and videomaker—is a driving force in Malaysia’s underground/indie music scene, using "three chords and the truth" to expose society’s absurdities and injustices. From the streets to academia, he researches moral panics and suppressed histories in Malaysia’s music subcultures, with multiple fiery publications to his name. 🔥
In this event, he will present THE ETHICAL TROUBADOUR—a performance that blends lecture and singing—to expose how music has been labeled as “yellow culture” and turned into a political scapegoat. The exhibition brings together key figures from Malaysia’s underground music and art scenes: Joe Kidd (The Ricecooker Archives), Man Beranak from the punk venue Rumah Api, the punk band No Good and filmmaker Azam Sa‘ad, artist Poodien, musician Azmyl Yunor, and Taiwanese punk collective Suck Glue Boys.
