Notes for Tomorrow ─ Southern Taipei Version

Following its collaboration with Independent Curators International (ICI) in a touring exhibition in 2018, TheCube Project Space is going to collaborate with ICI again in the international traveling exhibition Notes for Tomorrow—Southern Taipei Version in 2022.

Curated and produced by ICI, co-organized by TheCube Project Space, Notes for Tomorrow—Southern Taipei Version features the works by a total of 35 curators and 34 artists/collectives from around the world. The curatorial philosophy behind this exhibition is to respond to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world and reflect on the instability and unknown state caused by the pandemic. Through a renewed focus and discussion on the life experiences, local cultures, colonial histories, as well as current issues about life and survival in different places, this exhibition not only resumes the human exploration of sustainability and shared wisdom, but also galvanizes the viewers to re-envisage a new global future.

Apart from the original traveling exhibition (30 international curators and 29 projects), Notes for Tomorrow—Southern Taipei Version also includes a local version curated by TheCube (the exhibition host in Taiwan) and Taiwanese new-generation curators (incl. Yu-Hsuan Lin, Wei-Lun Chen, Yujie Huang, and ChiaYing Wang). Five Taiwanese artists/collectives (i.e., Ting-Tong Chang + Hsien-Yu Cheng, Yen-Yen Ho, Hui-Hsin Chang, Yu Liu, and Print and Carve Dept.) are invited to give their respective responses to the exhibition theme from the perspective of Taiwan.

For the first time, TheCube Project Space is collaborating with eight art spaces (ten locations) in Taipei City, thereby extending the viewing experience to the places with different atmospheres, and inviting the viewers to space-hop in the south part of Taipei City. The locations include TheCube Project Space, TheCube 7F, Lightbox Photo Library, Halfway Café, Witch House, JingLü Gallery, SEAMS, To Dear. Alternative Art Gallery, Project Seek, and Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre.

About the Exhibition

Notes for Tomorrow is an exhibition conceived by ICI, featuring artworks selected by curators from around the world to reflect on a new global reality ushered in by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this cultural moment of transition, each work is a source of inspiration from the recent past and a guiding perspective for the future.

Many of the artworks in the exhibition address spirituality as a grounding mechanism, sharing ways to make sense of the world when so much is in doubt. Some engage with specific mythology, while others reveal political structures that may or may not still be standing. The formation of monuments is questioned, and their removal is all but certain. The exhibition addresses art’s potential in the construction of collective memory in a global era. We learn the importance of sustaining and sharing different forms of knowledge, prompting us to re-imagine our conceptions of the future.

Notes for Tomorrow is a traveling exhibition organized and produced by ICI and initiated by Frances Wu Giarratano, Becky Nahom, Renaud Proch, and Monica Terrero. The exhibition was made possible with the generous support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, VIA Art Fund, and ICI’s Board of Trustees and International Forum. The exhibited works were selected by alumni of ICI’s Curatorial Intensive, With the ever-present backdrop of a global pandemic, ICI turned to these curators to question and reassess values and relevance in contemporary culture, and asked each of them to share an artwork they believe is vital to be seen today.
